Atlantic Dry Dock

When Atlantic Marine, Inc. (AM) was started in 1964, founder George W. Gibbs III was determined that his shipyard would succeed. Located in Jacksonville, FL., Atlantic Marine began building ships. By 1966, it already became apparent that there was a need for a ship repair facility in addition to the ship building site, so they opened Atlantic Dry Dock on an adjacent property.

In the 1970s the corporation grew substantially and by 1980 AM had grown too large for its property and planned to expand. Significant additions to the company's existing property along the St. Johns River and Intracoastal Waterway, allowed for an even greater number of orders to come in. New repair piers, increased water depth, a new 4,000-ton marine railway, as well as some new launchways were all part of the company's attempts to keep up with their growing customer base.

In 1989, AM acquired the former ADDSCO Industries in Mobile, Alabama, opening two more shipyards. After the acquisition, the shipyard in Alabama would concentrate mostly on new construction while AM would specialize in repairs and conversions. Having two locations has enabled AM to expand its operation both in building and in repairing vessels; it now does more work than ever and can handle larger ships, too.
