Naval Station Pascagoula
Naval Station Pascagoula (NSP) is located in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on the mainland side of the Mississippi Sound, in the northwest portion of the Gulf of Mexico. NSP is just north of a small, man-made island called 'Singing River Island'. Access to the Gulf is gained via the Horn Island Pass Channel, a 350-ft wide channel which becomes the Pascagoula Channel about nine miles from the station.
The Naval Station has a single pier which extends from the north side of Singing River Island. It has a length of 680 feet and a width of 80 feet, and has two levels. Additional mooring space for smaller vessels is available at the quays along the shore at the south end of the pier.
The Port of Pascagoula can accommodate extensive large and small ship repairs with its facilities, such as the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation's floating drydock with a depth of 41 feet over the keel blocks, a lifting capacity of 38,000 tons, and the ability to handle vessels up to 820 feet long and 170 feet wide. It also has a graving dock, various cranes with up to 60-ton capacities, tugs and outfitting piers.
Weather is a big factor at NSP. Hurricanes come whipping through the port annually, often closing down operations and causing large amounts of damage.
