Turner & Newall Sprayed Limpet Asbestos

Turner & Newall (T&N) was a leading manufacturer of asbestos-containing products, including Sprayed Limpet Asbestos. Federal-Mogul acquired T&N in 1998, taking on a company facing substantial asbestos liabilities.

As asbestos claims increased, Federal-Mogul and its affiliates, including Turner & Newall, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. If you or a loved one developed mesothelioma or another asbestos disease after exposure to Turner & Newall asbestos products, an asbestos attorney at Early, Lucarelli, Sweeney & Meisenkothen (ELSM) can help you file a Turner & Newall asbestos trust claim.

Understanding the Federal-Mogul Asbestos Personal Injury Trust and T&N Subfund

The Federal-Mogul Asbestos Personal Injury Trust was established in 2007 as part of Federal-Mogul’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. It compensates eligible individuals with asbestos claims linked to Federal-Mogul and certain affiliated companies, including Turner & Newall (T&N).

The Trust consists of four subfunds, including the T&N Subfund, which processes and pays asbestos personal injury claims associated with Turner & Newall, Flexitallic, Ferodo, and other T&N entities. Eligible claimants may receive compensation from the T&N Subfund according to the Trust Distribution Procedures (TDP).

In 2025, the T&N Subfund of the Federal-Mogul Asbestos Personal Injury Trust:

  • Paid approximately 17,570 T&N asbestos claims.
  • Paid approximately $20.5 million to asbestos victims.
  • Reported approximately $440.17 million remaining in total assets.

Approximately 188,000 Turner & Newall asbestos claims have been paid since the inception of the asbestos trust fund. The Delaware Claims Processing Facility, LLC continues to pay qualified claimants. The Trust uses a payment percentage system to preserve funds for both current and future T&N asbestos claims.

Turner & Newall Asbestos Trust Payment Percentage

As of June 30, 2026, the Turner & Newall Asbestos Trust payment percentage is 2.9%. The scheduled value for a Turner & Newall mesothelioma claim filed under the Expedited Review is $200,000.

At a payment percentage of 2.9%, a Turner & Newall mesothelioma claim filed under the Expedited Review process can be expected to receive the standard scheduled value payment of $5,800.

Determining Review Process for Turner & Newall Asbestos Trust Claims

Turner & Newall asbestos claims may be reviewed through Expedited Review or Individual Review. A mesothelioma attorney can determine which process is appropriate for each claimant’s case to maximize claim payouts.

Compensation may depend on the claimant’s age, diagnosis, exposure history, economic loss, and the law firm’s previous settlement outcomes.

Claim review options include:

  • Expedited Review (ER): T&N claims submitted for ER are evaluated under the standard review process to confirm whether the claimant qualifies for the standard value payment assigned to the applicable disease category.
  • Individual Review (IR): T&N claims submitted for IR undergo a thorough assessment of the claimant’s exposure and medical history to determine the individualized claim value, which may be higher or lower than the scheduled value for the applicable disease level. Certain lung cancer claims, secondary exposure cases, or claims that don’t meet trust criteria must be submitted for IR.

An asbestos attorney at Early, Lucarelli, Sweeney & Meisenkothen can evaluate a claimant’s case to determine eligibility to file a mesothelioma claim and pursue compensation.

Turner & Newall’s Role in Asbestos Exposure

Turner & Newall (T&N) was established in England in 1920 through the merger of four companies involved in manufacturing and installing asbestos products. Over the following decades, T&N became a major international manufacturer, distributor, and installer of asbestos-containing insulation, textiles, cement products, and other industrial materials. The company also expanded into asbestos-mining operations in Canada and southern Africa.

Turner & Newall faced asbestos liability in the United States from several business operations. These included manufacturing Sprayed Limpet Asbestos, owning Keasbey & Mattison and certain Canadian subsidiaries, and distributing raw asbestos fiber. These operations ultimately led to thousands of asbestos lawsuits involving workers and others exposed to T&N asbestos products.

Key events in Turner & Newall’s asbestos history include:

  • 1924: Nellie Kershaw, a worker at Turner Brothers Asbestos Factory in Rochdale, England, died from pulmonary asbestosis. Her case became an important early example of occupational asbestos exposure disease.
  • 1925: T&N acquired Ferodo Ltd., an English manufacturer of brake and clutch linings.
  • 1928: T&N acquired Bell’s United Asbestos, a manufacturer of asbestos-cement products, including water-supply pressure pipes.
  • 1929: Turners Asbestos Cement Ltd. joined the T&N group, expanding the company’s asbestos-cement manufacturing operations.
  • 1934: T&N acquired a controlling interest in Keasbey & Mattison, a U.S. manufacturer of asbestos products, expanding T&N’s asbestos operations in the U.S.
  • 1962: T&N subsidiary J.W. Roberts Ltd. granted Armstrong Contracting & Supply Company (AC&S) an exclusive U.S. license to use and distribute Sprayed Limpet Asbestos.
  • Late 1960s-1970s: T&N began phasing out its use of asbestos. Newalls’ Washington factory stopped using asbestos by June 1972.
  • 1970: J.W. Roberts’ business merged with Turners Asbestos Cement.
  • 1995: In Margereson & Hancock v. J.S. Roberts Ltd., two Armley, Leeds residents successfully established liability for asbestos exposure caused by dust released from the J.W. Roberts factory into the surrounding neighborhood. The case became an important precedent involving environmental asbestos exposure.
  • 1998: Federal Mogul acquired Turner & Newall, making it a wholly owned subsidiary.
  • By 2001: T&N resolved approximately 245,000 asbestos personal injury claims and paid approximately $835 million, while substantial future liabilities remained.
  • 2001: Federal-Mogul and affiliates, including T&N, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to address thousands of pending asbestos claims.
  • 2007: The Federal Mogul Asbestos Personal Injury Trust was created to pay present and future asbestos claims. It included the T&N, FMP, Fel-Pro, and Vellumoid Subfunds.
  • 2010: The T&N Subfund Trust began accepting asbestos claims.

Turner & Newall Asbestos Products

Turner & Newall and its subsidiary companies manufactured and supplied a wide range of asbestos-containing insulation, construction, textile, and friction products.

One of Turner & Newall’s best-known asbestos products was Sprayed Limpet Asbestos. Developed and patented by T&N subsidiary J.W. Roberts Ltd, Limpet was a spray-applied insulation product. It was used for fire protection, acoustical treatment, and thermal insulation in commercial and industrial buildings. Workers applied Limpet to structural steel, walls, ceilings, and other surfaces.

Through its subsidiary companies, Turner & Newall manufactured and supplied additional asbestos-containing products that included:

Who Was Most At-Risk for Asbestos Exposure?

Workers who manufactured, handled, installed, or applied Turner & Newall asbestos-containing products faced higher risk of occupational asbestos exposure. This included T&N employees, insulation workers, and other tradesmen who worked with or near Turner & Newall asbestos products at jobsites.

Family members of occupationally exposed workers may also have experienced secondary asbestos exposure through contact with asbestos fibers carried home on clothing or other personal items. This exposure can contribute to the development of different types of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.

Occupational Exposure

Construction and insulation workers faced potential exposure while applying Turner & Newall Sprayed Limpet Asbestos. Other industrial workers could have inhaled airborne asbestos fibers while performing their jobs nearby. Exposure may have been greater in enclosed and poorly ventilated areas.

Despite the known health risks associated with asbestos, workers who handled T&N asbestos products were not given adequate warnings or proper protective equipment.

Secondary Asbestos Exposure

Workers who handled Turner & Newall asbestos products could carry asbestos fibers home on their clothing, shoes, or hair. Family members could then inhale those fibers through direct contact.
