World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City

The World Trade Center (WTC) was one of the most recognizable landmarks in the New York City skyline. During the construction of the towers, asbestos-containing fireproofing and other building materials were widely used, exposing construction workers and other tradesmen to dangerous fibers.

After the September 11 attacks, asbestos-containing dust from the collapse of the World Trade Center spread throughout lower Manhattan, creating another major source of exposure for first responders, cleanup crews, Port Authority employees, and many others.

If you or a loved one developed mesothelioma after working on the construction of the World Trade Center or after exposure to 9/11 dust, you may be entitled to financial compensation. The attorneys at Early, Lucarelli, Sweeney & Meisenkothen (ELSM) help mesothelioma victims and their families pursue justice.

World Trade Center at a Glance

  • The World Trade Center, often referred to as the Twin Towers, consisted of 7 buildings, with construction on 6 of them starting during a time when asbestos-containing materials and products were used.
  • Asbestos-containing products used in the WTC buildings included W.R. Grace vermiculite and Mono-Kote (MK-3) fireproofing.
  • Construction workers, tradesmen, and maintenance personnel were exposed to asbestos fibers during the construction of the towers and surrounding structures.
  • The collapse on September 11, 2001, released asbestos-laden dust, exposing first responders, cleanup crews, and nearby residents.
  • At least eight asbestos trust funds, established to compensate mesothelioma victims, recognize World Trade Center as a known asbestos exposure jobsite.

Asbestos Exposure at the World Trade Center

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, when most of the WTC structures were constructed, asbestos was widely used in commercial buildings because of its fire resistance, durability, and insulating properties. Asbestos exposure is a known cause of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses.

Some of the World Trade Center buildings that contained asbestos include:

  • World Trade Center 1 & 2 (North and South Towers): Construction began in 1966. Both towers used a variety of asbestos-containing products, including spray insulation, block insulation, gaskets, cement, elevator brakes, ceiling and floor tiles, pumps, and valves. Most asbestos was concentrated on the first 40 floors due to New York City’s asbestos ban in the early 1970s, but the 75th/76th and 108th/109th floors also contained thermal insulation.
  • World Trade Center 5 (North Plaza Building): Asbestos insulation was used to cover pipes and generators during construction, which began in 1968. Fireproofing that had previously been removed by workers was manually reapplied using a trowel.
  • Elevators, basements, and mechanical equipment rooms throughout the WTC buildings: These areas were heavily lined with asbestos, including fireproofing materials on elevator shafts, basement steel beams, and mechanical equipment rooms.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 workers were employed during WTC construction and were exposed to asbestos in many ways, including direct contact with asbestos-containing materials, inhalation of fibers from spray insulation, or exposure during cleanup of asbestos products.

Asbestos Exposure and 9/11

When the Twin Towers and surrounding WTC buildings collapsed on September 11, 2001, the destruction released a massive cloud of dust and debris throughout lower Manhattan. This dust contained asbestos fibers and other toxic materials, resulting in another wave of World Trade Center asbestos exposure for first responders, cleanup crews, nearby residents, and survivors.

More than 25 years after the tragic events of 9/11, people continue to become sick and succumb to illnesses caused by the large amounts of asbestos dust released into the air at the World Trade Center. According to the CDC, it is estimated that more than 400,000 individuals were exposed to dust and debris from the World Trade Center collapse, which contained hazardous substances including asbestos. This group includes construction laborers, first responders, Port Authority staff, 9/11 survivors, and nearby residents.

More than 50,000 people have been diagnosed with 9/11-related cancer, including 24 confirmed cases of mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos exposure. The CDC’s World Trade Center Health Program continues to monitor and treat 9/11-related illnesses, including mesothelioma, affecting responders and survivors.

High-Risk Occupations at the World Trade Center

Occupations at risk for asbestos exposure during the construction and renovations of the World Trade Center Towers included:

  • Iron workers
  • Masons
  • Plumbers
  • Steamfitters
  • Tile workers

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, a new group of individuals faced exposure to asbestos and other toxic dust released during the collapse of the buildings. These post-9/11 high-risk groups include:

  • First responders (firefighters, police, emergency medical personnel)
  • Cleanup and recovery workers
  • Port Authority staff and other site personnel
  • Nearby residents and office workers
  • Survivors who lived, worked, or attended school in lower Manhattan

Secondary Asbestos Exposure

Families of employees who built the World Trade Center and regularly handled asbestos, as well as the families of first responders and cleanup teams after 9/11, are among those at an increased risk of developing mesothelioma. Workers and first responders often came home with asbestos fibers on their clothes, footwear, and hair, putting their families at risk of secondary exposure. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma due to indirect or secondary asbestos exposure, you may be eligible for financial compensation.

Compensation for World Trade Center Workers and 9/11 Victims With Mesothelioma

If you or a family member has received a mesothelioma diagnosis linked to asbestos exposure either from the World Trade Center's construction or the events following 9/11, you might qualify for compensation.

There are several methods to obtain compensation for your illness or the loss of a loved one. In addition to the asbestos trust funds and related legal actions, there exists a fund designated for individuals who suffered toxic exposure during 9/11 and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Asbestos Trust Funds

Certain companies that manufactured asbestos-containing products remain liable for damages and may still face legal proceedings. Many other companies that supplied asbestos materials used at the World Trade Center have since gone bankrupt.

Several of these bankrupt companies have established asbestos trust funds specifically to compensate workers exposed to asbestos. Individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma may have the opportunity to file claims with these trust funds.

These include, but are not limited to:

Bankrupt Asbestos Company Asbestos Exposure Start Date Asbestos Exposure End Date
Eagle-Picher Industries
Fibreboard 12/31/1982
Keene Corporation 1/1/1969 12/31/1982
Owens Corning 12/31/1982
Pittsburgh Corning 1/1/1970
United States Gypsum 1/1/1966 12/31/1982
United States Mineral Products 3/29/1969 12/31/1982
W.R. Grace 5/20/1966 12/31/1982

Asbestos Lawsuits

Individuals who encountered asbestos-containing materials while working on the World Trade Center or during post-9/11 cleanup, and who have since been diagnosed with mesothelioma, may be eligible to file a lawsuit.

Legal actions, such as mesothelioma lawsuits, are typically filed against the manufacturers, suppliers, or distributors of asbestos-containing products. These lawsuits can result in settlements or jury verdicts that provide financial compensation to victims and their families. If you lost a loved one to mesothelioma, you may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim against these manufacturers.

Because statutes of limitations apply, it is essential to seek guidance from a mesothelioma lawyer promptly, as each state enforces strict filing deadlines.

Common Questions About Asbestos Exposure at the World Trade Center

Was asbestos used during the construction of the World Trade Center?

Yes. Various asbestos-containing materials were used in the construction of the WTC. One of the main products was fireproofing material, which was either sprayed or applied by hand to the exterior columns of the Twin Towers, as well as to elevator shafts and mechanical equipment rooms in several WTC buildings. Both the workers who applied these materials and other tradespeople were exposed to asbestos on a daily basis.

Are 9/11 workers and first responders still at risk of mesothelioma?

Yes. Mesothelioma has a long latency period, often developing 10 to 50 years after asbestos exposure.

I worked at the World Trade Center, am I eligible to file a claim with an asbestos trust fund?

Yes. Asbestos bankruptcy trusts provide financial compensation to employees and their families who were exposed to asbestos and later developed mesothelioma. While the World Trade Center does not have its own asbestos trust, individuals exposed at the site can still submit claims to other trusts. These funds were established by the manufacturers of asbestos-containing products used during the construction of the World Trade Center.
