Connecticut Chrysotile Asbestos Exposure: New Research Highlights Mesothelioma Risks for Factory Workers

His article, “Underestimation of Chrysotile Health Risk due to Under-ascertainment of Mesothelioma,” was recently published in NEW SOLUTIONS: A Journal of Environmental and Occupational Health Policy. It looks at workers from four Connecticut factories in Stratford, New Haven, and Bridgeport.

These factories used chrysotile asbestos in products like brake linings, cables, and appliances. For many years, people thought chrysotile was safer than other types of asbestos. But Attorney Meisenkothen’s research shows that even chrysotile alone can cause mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

The report identified 24 mesothelioma cases tied to these factories including some in workers with no other asbestos exposure. It also explains that many other cases were likely missed or misdiagnosed, due to outdated medical records and limitations in past medical test.

Some companies still argue that chrysotile is less dangerous or even safe. But this study adds to the growing evidence that all forms of asbestos are harmful, and that exposed workers deserve to know their rights.
