The Remington Arms Company is one of the oldest and most prominent gun and ammunition manufacturers in America. Like many industrial companies, Remington Arms used asbestos in some of its products, manufacturing processes, and facilities throughout the 20th century.

Workers who handled asbestos-containing materials at Remington Arms may have inhaled these toxic fibers known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer. Customers who used Remington Arms ammunition may also have been exposed to asbestos during normal use of these products.

  • Numerous asbestos exposure lawsuits are pending against Remington Arms Company nationwide.

Asbestos Exposure at Remington Arms Company

Historically, the Remington Arms Company frequently used asbestos in the construction, operation, and repair of its manufacturing plants, exposing workers and sometimes their families to cancer-causing asbestos fibers. Because of its heat resistant properties, asbestos was considered a valuable tool in industrial projects. It was used for insulation, pipe fittings, boilers, furnaces, valves, and other industrial equipment.

Remington Arms Company also put consumers at risk of asbestos exposure. The company began producing plastic-coated shotgun shells stuffed with asbestos fiber. When these shells are fired from a weapon, asbestos dust is released, which can be inhaled by the person operating the gun.

Key Dates in Remington Arms Company History and Asbestos Exposure:

  • 1930s-1960s: Remington Arms Company uses asbestos in plant construction and machinery. Workers at both the Ilion, NY and Bridgeport, CT facilities are likely exposed to asbestos in building materials, including insulation for boilers, furnaces, valves, pumps, and pipe coverings.
  • 1960s-1970s: Remington Arms Company begins using asbestos in the base wads of plastic shotgun shells, with asbestos comprising 40% of the base wad material. Workers involved in shell assembly, as well as consumers firing these shells, are exposed to asbestos fibers as a result.
  • 1970s: Asbestos hazards are documented at Remington Arms facilities. Internal documents show that DuPont (parent company of Remington Arms) is aware of the dangers of asbestos, and puts limited safety measures in place for workers. However, the company continues to use asbestos in plant materials and consumer products. Customers are not warned of exposure risks.
  • 1980s: Asbestos is phased out of use in shell manufacturing as a result of new federal guidelines. Remington Arms Company workers continue to experience residual asbestos exposure at older facilities during maintenance and cleanup of those sites.
  • 2000s-2025: Worker asbestos exposure claims are filed by former employees of Remington Arms Company. In 2025, a jury awards $9 million to a hunter who suffered asbestos exposure from Remington Arms-manufactured “green” shotgun shells.

Common Questions About Asbestos Exposure at Remington Arms Company

Is the Remington Arms Company still in operation?

Though the original Remington Arms Company has gone bankrupt, the firearms and ammunitions assets of the company were sold off and continue to operate under new ownership. RemArms, LLC, is the current manufacturing arm for Remington guns; the Kinetic Group now owns the ammunitions arm of the business. The Ilion, NY factory was closed in March of 2024, while the Bridgeport plant ceased operations in the 1980s.

If I used the Remington Arms Company’s products, am I at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease?

Yes, you could be. Some shotgun shells produced by Remington Arms Company are known to have contained asbestos in their based-wad material. When those shells are fired from a gun, they release asbestos fibers into the air, which can be inhaled. Of particular concern are Remington Arms Company shells that came in green plastic casing.
